over the hill Maps and Areas: Six Hand-Crafted Places to Get Stuck

over the hill is built from six hand-crafted areas, each roughly 4 km by 4 km, split across two launch regions: Canada and Algeria. It is not one open world and nothing is procedurally generated. You travel between areas without returning to the main menu. This page explains the confirmed structure.

Six areas, two regions, no procedural generation. The official FAQ and the release announcement together pin down the map structure precisely: over the hill is area-based, with different regions and different areas inside those regions, and you can drive between areas without going back to the main menu. Each area is about 4 km x 4 km.

What we know about each region

Canada is the region the demo covered: its playable area was Emerald Lake, a lakeside-and-forest setting with cabins, lodges, viewpoints and mud. The release post promises the launch version of each area packs "more content and surprises than what we had in the demo."

Algeria is the second launch region. The August progress post says the team "made great progress working on the Algeria region" and release materials list it beside Canada. Its terrain character has not been detailed beyond the region name; screenshots show desert canyon country (rocky beds, log crossings), but the developers have not publicly matched specific screenshots to specific areas, so we do not either.

⚠️ Unconfirmed. Area names beyond Emerald Lake, and the split of the six areas between regions (for example, three Canada and three Algeria), have not been published. A New Zealand map is a community request, nothing more.

What you find out there

Inside areas, the store page names the discovery layer: remote cabins, scenic viewpoints, natural landmarks, meteorites that have fallen from the sky, and portals that can take you to new areas. Wildlife is confirmed with "different animals", tracked in the animal photo journal shown in an official August video. Weather and the day-night cycle change conditions on the same trail, which is what makes a 4x4-metering game out of sightseeing.
